UPDATE!: Because the prices were only on the VodafoneAU website for around 25 minutes and then were taken down it is not clear whether these are the actual ones or if they are old pricing plans (maybe created before Optus posted their plans) and were put up by mistake. We are now treating them as UNCONFIRMED but keep checking back for all the breaking news on the iPhone3G.
Its finally here, what many people all around Australia have been waiting for, the Vodafone pricing for the iPhone3G.
They are all cap plans and all offer data, albeit in small amounts. The lowest is $69 a month with an upfront cost of $189 for 8gb and $309 for 16gb. The rest continue up from there.

Considering you can get exactly the same plan (16gb iPhone3G, $300 of calls, txt, 250mb data) on Optus for $61 as you can get on Vodafone for $69 and there is no upfront cost, it looks like Optus is offering the best plans by far.
VodafoneAU is also not offering any outright options causing an uproar among many.
Telstra has yet to release detailed pricing, but knowing their history, many have decided that in the end, Optus will be offering the best iPhone3G in Australia.

Voda may be slightly more expensive but with all the headaches i’ve had with Optus in the past, I’m happy to pay the extra. Going back to Optus would be like going back to communism.
Won’t ever get me to sign up with Vodafone.. their level of reception is nothing on Telstra’s..

I think all the plans are too pricey so I probably will wait for the dust to settle after launch.
1GB of data is tiny if you receive emails and go to websites where news site pages are 200K-500K for the homepage.

The $29 3Gb mobile broadband plan with 3 includes 500 minutes of calls. What’s stopping me putting that 3 SIM card in an unlocked iPhone and only paying $29 per month for 3Gb worth of data and 500 mins of calls?
We’ll Telstra is going to have the best coverage with NextG compared to 3G, if they release their iPhone under NextG (they can still release a phone under 3G), which I think is a pretty nice reason to go with Telstra if it’s a higher price plan/cap/what ever, although Telstra will still prob only give you 200mb or so then charge you $150 per GB after that. What’s the point of having the coverage if you can’t use it?
Locking may stop you… perhaps buy the optus iPhone outright and do what you want.
I don’t get how you can get a 3G boradband plan with 5GB of data for $39/month but with the iPhone all of a sudden it’s $50+/month for 1GB.

I have found this whole process very frustrating.
Telstra: Went into a satellite branch on Monday, where I was told there would be so few phones available on Friday that I may as well not bother. So I went into the main branch yesterday, where they said if I showed up at the opening at 6am I was bound to get one- but since I don’t know what their plans are, I don’t know if it will be worth it. The big bonus for me is the free access to their wifi network, because I spend my entire life near a Telstra wifi point.
Optus: Sure, they have the best plans so far, but I went into their stores and was told that if I hadn’t already pre-bought an Optus phone, there was no chance I would get one on Friday. Optus are only an option after the initial rush- plus the Optus wifi network is not as widespread as Teltras.
Vodafone: Okay, so I’ve been a lifelong voda customer, but their plan stinks compared to Optus’.
All things being equal, I will probably be at the Telstra store Friday morning, unless their plans are catastrophic, and I will probably try to ‘buy outright, unlock, and switch to a decent provider.’

Optus let me give them $50 for priority queuing, about five minutes after the Jobsnote. They just reminded me via email that I can not only skip the queue but get in 2 hours before the proles, so that’s pretty much settled it for me
Hipikat I am happy for you my man, but by the time I heard about the pre-booking, Optus had closed it, which actually makes them a less attractive option for me. I don’t wanna get up at 6am for the chance NOT to get an iphone, y’know?
i don’t think these prices are too bad, not as good as optus but previously being on optus they are pretty shit and i think i will go with vodafone anyway, i dont mind paying a bit more for better service. I hope that the reason they took the info down was because they realized they are not being competitive enough.
It does show an odd lack of foresight, I mean presumably they have people monitor the competition and put some thought into the plans, it seems odd they would put all that planning into it, then put the plans up, and then be like: “Hmm, actually, nah, let’s take them down again.”
Admin error… they probably accidentally published the pages out of the CMS system before they where meant to and just rolled it back.
Or even better… they are going back and making all the plans cheaper..! or adding more data to everything.
what a joke Voda, this pricing is not good. And telstra is just as bad, raving about their coverage but they conveniently left out their data costs, telstra are going to try and extort the public to use data on their supposedly fantastic next g network. What’s Optus’ number?

tom jones is probably right in that it was an admin error, but I’m sure we’re all hoping like crazy that they’re reviewing the plans and adjusting the prices/data allowances.
But as Destructor said, it’s impossible that they were unaware of Optus’ plans, so it’s not like it was a last-minute thing that their prices were shit compared to their competitors.
*Maybe* they had one set of pre-Optus-releasing-their-plans plans and once they saw Optus’ plans they changed theirs but accidentally published the wrong ones this morning. Highly unlikely, but you know never know…

My plan was to go into optus and buy one prepaid in cash, however, im now somewhat freaking out as i do not have a priotity as i missed the boat to sign up (dam)… So, im HOPING that telstra release the iphone on prepaid for roughly the same price as optus are. BUT, i am yet to hear that telstra are bringing the iphone onto prepaid, which sucks! … so, might try my luck and walk past an optus store early in the morning and see if i cant quickly get in and out pay cash, quick and easy lol… (im in Adelaide, so hopefully it wont be too busy in this little country city town)… But, if all else fails, and if telstra bring it on prepaid, ill go there… We’ll See What Happens…

The answer here is that it doesn’t include $500 worth of calls for free, it’ll cost you another $99 on top of that. I used to work for 3. The broadband plan has an old style “hot for 3″ plan that is a $99 Cap with no minimum spend (thats why it cost nothing extra than the $29, and if you make calls it costs extra) and includes 300 mins free talk to other 3 users.
So if you unlock the iphone and put the 3 mobile broadband sim in it be prepared for bills up to $128…

There aren’t only two carriers, there are 3. Optus, Telstra and Vodafone. Only Optus has announced pricing for outright purchases and those phones can be unlocked for 80 bucks which means you can use the provider of your choice.

hey mate sorry to burst you bubble but there isnt that much diff between the telstra and optus deals.. telstra cover more of australia and i find them more reliable.. i have a next g mobile atm and i have travelled a bit.. it only lost reception once..
I also read somewhere that there is 1gb included a month of data with the $30 plan.. its a bargin and i will sure be getting one from them..

1) there service is completely S**t
2) Read the fine print - YOU CANT get 3G on the majority of its network as the iphone doesnt support the frequences optus uses outside the major cities (& even inside some)
Telstra will have the best network but you can bet their prices will be bad.
Vodafone in the past has had pretty good service, but the prices above are just stupid.
How does $299 us for 16GB translate into $460 au???
I emailed Telstra. They said they will not be offering the iPhone on Pre-Paid only on Post-Paid. I also asked if you will be able to buy it outright? They didn’t actually answer that one. But im still convinced Telstra is the best option so they have my vote.

I guess if you live in a large metro area, and rarely go outside, the coverage is pretty adequate. That’s no comfort for more rural or outer-city dwellers, but for many of us who live well inside the big cities, the coverage is so much less of an issue.

Yes but really - given the way that the Optus plans at least focus on CALLS! CALLS! CALLS! - you could see how someone that didn’t get the whole 3G point of the iPhone would be happy with them.
Me myself, I am hugely concerned about the data component. I think people that don’t use much data really won’t be getting the most out of their iPhone. Frankly, unless the “cool” factor is enough for them, I think they’re wasting their money. In terms of straight mobile phones there are far better choices around: ones with video calls, better cameras, video capabilities, etc.
The brilliance of the iPhone is that it is part phone, part multimedia player, and part internet tablet. But many people seem to be missing that, or they just don’t care.

Telstra have only stated that their plans start at $30… no doubt this will be the very base plan, and won’t include data or very much value for money.
Optus is looking like the best option at this time.
As for stock, I’ve been told by several sources that the iPhone will be constrained till atleast Christmas. So, if you don’t have a pre-paid deposit with Optus, good luck getting an iPhone on Friday…

People don’t just buy mobile phone to make phone call or use the internet. It’s all about taking possesion of desired object… especially for the iPhone.
How can you guys be talking the iPhone.au up so much! BLATANT ripoff! And I quote, “The base version of the new iPhone costs $199 — half the $399 price of its predecessor; the higher-capacity version is now $299, down from $499.” These are US prices. Hence, at today’s exchange rates $1 AU is about $0.95 US (almost dollar for dollar). So a 16gb for $300 US OUTRIGHT is 16GB iPhone 3G (Black or White)= $849 from Optus. GTFOH! $549 difference!!!

no. its not $300 US outright. In US you have to be on a minimum 24 month $60 contract as well as paying $199 or $299 upfront. that is around $1639US or $1725AUD minimum (based on 8gb model). and that doesnt even include txt messages!
you go on the Optus ‘yes’ $49 cap plan, $7 for the 8gb, thats only $1344. includes calls, txts and 250mb data.
sure, they get unlimited data, but seriously, you dont need that much data, i used email and net all the time on my 1st gen phone and it worked out to be like…100mb a month.

Could someone explain to me the concept of outright phones?
Im am from Holland and im coming to Australia in a couple of months, and i am wheighing my options for buying an iphone. The iphone plans in Holland are pretty good in comparison to other countries, but i don’t want to be tied to an operator for 2 years. Therefore im considering to perhaps buy an iphone in Australia since the AUD-EURO rate is pretty good.
I thought an outright phone is a phone without simlock/country lock, but someone above pointed out the option of buying an iphone outright and unlocking it. Therefore im a bit confused whether or not an outright phone has some kind of lock on it and if this leaves an option for me to buy an australian iphone and use it in holland withouth having to hack it. That said, paying a bit more for a legal unlock isn’t a problem

When you buy a phone outright you buy it without tieing yourself into a contract. However, you are still locked to that carrier.
That’s why you pay the extra $80 to unlock it so you can use it on any carrier in any country.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Telstra plans are suckass for data. Maybe their saving grace is the “free wifi” access. Who knows.
I know many people want the iPhone for many different reasons, I was mostly being cheeky.
Really though, the hard part for the telcos is providing reasonable data plans without cannibalising existing offerings.
They are scared that giving data away too cheaply will make their other services irrelevant.
Think about it - If you and all your friends have a mobile, always-on internet device why would you use SMS? You can use MSN or any number of other IMs for “free”.
If you have a heap of data up your sleeve and a smartphone that runs Skype, why would you make normal calls?
If you can access the internet using your phone as a modem from most laptops/PCs, why would you bother connecting to an ISP another way?
The power of the iPhone coupled with the availability of Apps to do most anything on the AppStore along with a lot of data could really upset telcos. If they don’t get you for the data, what can they get you for? Not Calls, Not SMS, Not through their other ISP products?
Now, I’m not advocating any of the pricing structures we have seen, just sharing my theory on why making mobile data too accessible might not be in Telcos best interests.

The sad reality is that we either choose the best option from the plans available from our different providers or don’t use anything at all.
I was actually hoping that the iPhone’s appetite for data was going to drive data pricing down. From what Optus has shown us, it has to a degree, but not as much as I would like.
It wasn’t that long ago they were raping us by the megabyte.
My best advice if you want to be an early iPhone adopter is to buy it outright. Then in 6-12 months time when the providers pony up some better plans due to the increase in data-hungry handsets in use, you’ll have the freedom to switch.
Well, guys stop comparing data rate with other country… if you understand how much money & effort they spend to build infrastructure in Australia, you can’t say the data rate is over priced.
Australia is well-known for lack of population which means companies & government spend same amount money to build the infrastructure but get less profit compare to the other populated country.
So stop comparing data rate with other countries and face the reality we’re given. Focus on how to get the god damn phone ASAP !!!!

Probably Low - Stores open early are only allowing customers with deposits to get in before regular opening times. Also, after then customers with deposits are given preference.
I heard something around 60 units per store.
Still, if you have nothing else on, you can try your luck and see how you go.

benjuan, i think i’m definitely looking to do that.. although i’ve been with telstra for almost 5 years now.. i’m leaning towards optus as i’m not keen to sign up to a plan for more than 12 months, and no other carrier will be offering 12 month plans..
only way i’ll stay with telstra is if I can get a decent staff plan hook up though some contacts
whatever I do, I don’t think i’ll be rushing out to get an iPhone in just over 24 hours time.. give it a week or two & we’ll see how it all goes..

i will be getting my iphone from optus outright. dont care if its gonna cost me 800 somethin dollars at least the dam phone will be mine an not locked to some stupid contract which is gonna cost me 5000 over 2 years… doesnt seem worth it for a phone thats only worth 350 in the usa an our exchange rate is the exact same to theirs… all i have to say is greedy phone carriers.

C’mon guys.. compare apples to apples. In the USA 16Gb iPhone no-contract is US$699 + tax (which varies by state) so about AU$730+gst or AU$800.. assume some cost of shipping and whatever import duties our Govt has slapped on and we’re not that far off with Optus’ outright price of $849
As for those people complaining about data caps, even in the states with “unlimited” data most people seem to be using around 100-400Mb - the only users I’ve heard report anything higher don’t ever use WiFi (I know I will be) so the Optus $59 cap is looking like the sweet spot for heavy internet users.
I think everyone who is currently with Vodafone (myself included) should move to another carrier regardless of whether their re-released prices are good or bad just on principle.

I start to lean more and more to Telstra now, if they don’t screw with their data plan, which is still unannounced. But their huge wifi hotspot coverage sounds sweet.

Just spoke to 3 who again confirmed that they will be selling the iphone, but could not provide any further info or a release date. It’s good to be 3……..even if you have to wait!
I am turning up at vodafone, Chatswood Westfield, tomorow before 6am to just have a chance of getting one. WOW! i’m obsessed. hoo else is turning up early?

Telstra plans may suck as much as Voda plans but they have free WiFi…I’m voting with my wallet, free WiFi may not be free but at least it exists!

i was talking to a guy on the phone from optus and he said u wont get one from optus if you just turn up tomorow. You will only be able to put your name down for the next shipment of the one of the most talked abou pieces of technology. The chances of you getting one from optus tomorow from optus is so small i am going for vodafone.

Actually it looks like Vodafone is selling iphone outright, because of this:
“Early Exit Fee of $34.50 x months left on the 24 month contract”
Buy $69 plan, and cancel it, that makes $828 plus $309 for 16gb upfront payment :), yeah not reasonable, but still possible.

I think Optus has won… they have the cheapest plans. I want a 16gb on the $59 cap plan. It’s only $8 a month for the iPhone which means I pay only $192 for the iPhone… How awesome is that!!!

When I passed through apple store around 8:10 me and my friend saw massive people around Apple store, nearly decided to wait until next week. then we went to strathfield for last try. In contrast, it was so quiet there and they had only 2 16GB white left we were after. But they couldn’t serve NON PRE-ORDER customers before 9:00AM. Having spent half an hour watching other people (there were only 3 pre-order customers during that time) to see if any of them is after 16GB white. NO ONE picked the white one then they served us !!!
So that’s the story… In addition, after 10:00AM they still had quite a lot of 8GB iPhones but still not many people around the store while Apple store had quite a lot of people in the queue
For those of you already got the iPhone, have fun. and for the rest, good luck with your next chance. By the way, the Strathfield guy told me next shipment is landing on Monday.

Please let everyone know! Hopefully an alternative will be more receptive to new technology and won’t charge as much as it does for the iPhone’s basic functions.
At the very least, it’ll send pressure to Telstra, Vodafone, etc. to lower their prices.

Telstra having better customer service? LOL. Telstra and Optus both have terrible customer service, Telstra being the worst. In my experiences atleast.
Vodafone is the only company to never let me down in that regard, and I’m pretty sure I’ll stay on Vodafone pre-paid as long as I possibly can. I just hope we get some decent data rates soon, preferably before I buy an iPhone (i.e. when the 32gb version comes out) lol.
