Exclusive: Leaked Vodafone Document with iPhone 3G pricing - Definetely Fake
EDIT: The general feeling around iPhoneAE and other forums is that this is a fake, so remember to take it with a pinch of salt (or a handful)
EDIT 2: As confirmed by Vodafone AU in the comments (her email address is a Vodafone one) this is fake.
I was contacted today by an anonymous source with a leaked internal document from vodafone containing pricing information. Please note that like all rumors, this is not 100% confirmed, please do not intepret it as such.
Pricing as follows:
- CAP OPTION 1: $49 Cap plan includes (3G/GPRS) $1 per 10 minutes of mobile websites, 10 minutes only available on iPhone 3G. Also includes $310 credit.
- CAP OPTION 2: $69 Cap plan includes (3G/GPRS) $1 per 15 minutes of mobile websites, 15 minutes only available on $69 Cap plan with iPhone 3G. Also includes $470 credit.
- PLAN OPTION 3: Hot $70 Plan includes (3G/GPRS) $0.80 per 10 minutes of mobile websites, only available on Hot $70 Plan with iPhone 3G and upto 1GB of FREE data every two months. Also includes $75 credit.
- PLAN OPTION 4: Hot $100 Plan includes (3G/GPRS) $0.80 per 15 minutes of mobile websites, only available on Hot $100 Plan with iPhone 3G and upto 2GB of FREE data every two months. Also includes $125 credit.
- PREPAY OPTION 5: iPhone 3G will be locked to a Prepay offer for $239 with a $49 Prepay Maxi Cap. Data charges will be extra.
This is not finalised pricing, but a mockup of possible pricing.

Vodafone Australia provides the best quality service in a range of mobile technology and I believe
the proposed pricing for the new iPhone 3G will be to your liking.
Much thought has been made regarding the option of Prepay and Plans and I propose to you to
include both for the iPhone 3G. It will bring the very best out of the device and create a
competitive plan against Singtel (Optus). This mock-up also derives the consent of Apple Inc.

I wonder what they mean by “mobile websites”.
But this sounds good, and about what I am on now. I wonder how much the actual phone will cost.
Instead of paying for actual data recieved you are paying for time to access a site. If the network is slow and it takes you 10 minutes retrieve 2 websites, its cost you a dollar.
SO, the shittiest plan ever, basically. Pay by the MINUTE, not by data downloaded? Utterly, utterly unacceptable. Whoever dreamed this plan up should be fired, twice.
how can u ‘pay per minute’ if ur using push email services for eg? 24/7 charges? dont they know how much data the iphone uses? u dont actually need to open safari to use data services… half the apps on the phone req data.
the main reason why i want the iphone is for all the net stuff. i have a ipod touch today and love it - i just wish i could use email/net all the time and not just on the home wifi. is that so much to ask??

This is almost definitely inaccurate. Unless they have multiple access points (AP’s) for general data services, and one for web browsing.
None of the plan’s make mention of Apples’ push-sync services (which will use constant data).
Hence - this one look very, very fake. And looks to be written by somebody with no mobile data experience at all.
I hope Troy is right because these plans will neuter the iPhone and cripple how Australians use it, which seems entirely predictable.
Troy unfortunately this bears a very similar resemblance to Vodafone’s current data plan- they definitely charge by the minute at present. I would not be at all suprised if this turns out to be the case. If it is, then no consumer in their right mind would go with a vodafone iPhone plan over another provider who charged for data downloaded. Vodafone needs their head examined.
You just cannot have timed data usage… honestly what is this? dialup? Quite disappointed…
I hope this leak is wrong (although it does seem legit… all those plans/caps are real vodafone deals) or at least Optus has a better deal…

HAHA, 3 is gonna have the best prices by far when they release it. Look at their current plans, they have the best for phone data, and they know they’ll have to raise the bar!

Roger is right. I’m much better off with 3’s $29cap + $20 x-series with 500mb per month than vodafone’s $70plan with 500mb pm.

But remember, these prices aren’t final it says on the original they’re just a ‘mock up’ of what they first planned to price.
And btw vodafone charges data by minute.

The grammar is poor, more like someone who has english as a second language: “This plan derives the consent of Apple Inc” - WTF?
The “Department of Communications, information technology and the arts” isn’t called that any more, its the “Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy” - something someone dealing with the Department would know
Finally, why would Vodafone send such a thing to DBCDE - what would they ‘review’ - they have no interest in phone pricing, if anybody was interested in the price of something it would be the ACCC, not a Govt. department. The only reason would be if Vodafone was tendering for phone services to the department, and if they were, it wouldn’t be a letter, it’d be a whole pack of information rather than a single badly worded letter.
Finally, Vodafone has had $49 and $79 caps for ages, why would they introduce a $69 cap for the iPhone?

It could be wrong, but it is pretty convincing. For a start, the grammar is fine, and the page is what I would assume Vodafone’s page header/footer would look like, although this wouldn’t be to hard to fake. As for the Department mistake, it was a very recent change, so I wouldn’t look to far into that. As for why Vodafone would send that, unless you are directly involved with that Department, how can you be sure that they do not require this information. As for $69 Cap, why wouldn’t they, they know how big a seller the iPhone is going to be, and want to offer as many plans as possible to compete against Optus.

So, you are saying, someone who directs pricing at Vodafone Australia is so illiterate as to misuse the word ‘derives’ and use the sentence “Much thought has been made regarding the option of…”
Secondly, Vodafone has changed their logo, its no longer that style
Thirdly, all their plans are ‘Maxi Cap’ or ‘Super Cap’ - this document just says “$49 Plan” - which contravenes their marketing of the past several years
If it were some kind of official document that Vodafone was compelled to provide, it would have been reviewed and signed off at the highest levels - requiring legal and marketing approvals, these kind of grammar and brand errors would never have been permitted to leave the organization - I’ve worked for major organizations, they are anal about this kind of thing.
And again, there is no way a Govt. department would compel a corporation to provide details of its pricing plans for a business as usual activity like a new telephone handset.

Vodafone, even if this plan is a fake, vodafone’s current data-pricing plan for all other phones is currently charged by-the-minute- this fact is indisputable. So unless they have a major revision in how they do business (which I sincerely hope they do!), it may well be something like this.
I’ve never agreed with Vodafone.
I just think they’re a little pathetic with their plans and whatnot.

If any of the Vodafone plans include charging data according to time, then I’m 200% certain I’ll ditch them and go 3.
My cousin works for vodafone and he said apple is forcing all the iphone providers not to disclose any details until the 11th of july - and that the salespeople themselves won’t receive any information until at most a day prior to release. I’m inclined to believe him.
That’s a bit of an odd strategy- how will consumers choose who to go with without pre-information?
There will be huge confusion on the day if that happens and they prob won’t sell as much as they hoped if they only release prices on the day.

What he told me is that apple wants complete control for the launch - perhaps he meant that they won’t know anything until apple gives the go-ahead.
Otherwise I’d say it’s enough arrogance to assume they’ll sell out regardless, which I’m sad to say is probably likely.
Regardless, I’m unlikely to get one at launch, as I’m a poor, jobless student. Though, I have a tiny trickle of income, and if the “$49 cap” that he guessed may be one of the plans offered is, in fact, offered, and has a data limit rather than being billed by time, I’ll probably budget away enough to get one…
@Starayo: Your friend is pulling your leg. Just about everyone else in the world has released their tariffs for the new iPhone.
The problem we have here is too many cooks spoiling the broth. Neither want to give the other a marketing advantage by announcing first.
Once one blinks, the other will announce within hours. You’re telling me they don’t aready know. Puleese! They knew months ago. They just don’t want you to know - yet.
I agree with Kevin, this is one long game of marketing chicken - the question is, who will blink first.
I wonder if its a game of inches - both Vodafone and Optus have similar cap plans (Optus seems a little more expensive), so they might just argue of the price of the handset - with the second to release undercutting the price by $10 dollars or so.
I also think they are going to sell out quickly.
I’m in two minds, I’m not a queuer and I think waiting will likely be sensible, to see if Three and Telstra also announce it - and to see if there is a round of price cutting after the launch.
On the other hand, I’ve been waiting forever for a new phone, I’m out of contract and … well… I’d like it now please.

It makes in sense that they give you free gb downloads but charge you by the minute to access them!
It should run like home internet, you pay a set price and get a set amount of data to do whatever with.
eg. 24.95 per moth for 2GB data (no surfing fees). The pages you download are count as data just like ADSL or Broadband.
That better be a fake because that is the biggest joke plans I’ve ever heard of.
Thank god this is fake, because it is the most appalling plan I have ever heard. It would give any telco an incentive to provider slow, broken service forcing users to remain trying to load the same page for ages and ages.
(I hope Telstra’s marketing department doesn’t read this, they might get ideas…)
