Welcome to post #1 in the iPhone Apps Blog (iPab). This issue will show you how to activate your iPhone and install “AppTap”, the application that opens your iPhone up to the world of community developed applications. This process does not require a PC or Mac, just your new iPhone and access to a wireless internet enabled network.

If your iPhone is already unlocked, then chances are you already have Installer.app installed and do not need to go through this process. However, if your iPhone is fresh off the boat (or plane, or whatever!) then this will get you activated and up and running.This process works on 1.1.2 model iPhones. Ready! strap yourself in and we are off.

Please remember that this will just unlock the phone and allow applications to be installed, not allow any sim to be used in it. For that you will need to wait for Issue #2 :) However if you are impatient, or just hate reading instructions, you can skip to the bottom of the post for the whole process in glorious YouTube vision!

Step One - Slide for Emergency calls, dial *#307# press call
Step Two - Now use the back button on the top of your screen to remove *#307# , now enter 0 ,
Step Three - Pay attention here as this gets confusing. :) Press call, press answer, press hold, press decline. Now you get to the contact list.
Step Four - Push contacts and add a new contact and type in “prefs://11? as a web-address. Add this url “http://jailbreakme.com” as an additional URL as well.
Step Five - Now when you tap “prefs://11? you can select your preferred WiFi network. This gets us online to download the neccesary apps we need.
Step Six - Press the home button and move back to the dial-pad. Repeat steps 1-2 till you can access contacts.
Step Seven - Go back to the contact list by Dialing 0, push call, then answer, then contacts, then hit the “http://jailbreakme.com” web address we inputed earlier.
Step Eight - Scroll down to the bottom, click “Install AppSnapp”. The browser will now exit.
Wait for your iPhone to restart on it’s own.
That’s it, your now done and have an unlocked iPhone and Installer.app is installed and ready to run. Feel free to explore all the new apps at your disposal, or wait for Issue #2 where we will explore the possibilities of Summerboard, our first reviewed custom app.
