The iPhone App Store has been a resounding success: 100 million downloads worldwide. 

But… why are the apps only for running on your iPhone and iPod?

Why can’t app developers be encouraged (via potential profitability) to make apps for the iMac/Macbook as well?

Apple of course already has all the SDK and development tools in place for Mac app development. Can’t the developers that make indie games, specific widgets, handy organisational software, music software, etc, submit their creations to Apple for a bit of the ol’ 70/30 profit split? Y’know.. let Apple handle all the hassle of credit card billing, update pushing, hosting and bandwidth, to allow $0.99 (Or $1.19 in Australia) fun-on-the-bun games for your computer?

Couldn’t the next version of iTunes come with two tabs in its App Store.. iPhone/iPod Apps, and Mac Apps?

Then the next step after that is for iTunes to sell Windows apps. Beat Windows 7 to the punch, as Windows 7 is rumoured to have a software marketplace.

After all.. isn’t the iTunes app store just Ubuntu’s package manager with people’s credit card details in the system?

But seriously. Imagine how many good games would there would be for your Mac. It would out-fun the PC, just for its sheer number of weird games. It could be a return to the days of crazy fun simple games, rather than the cinematic half-interactive games of today.

Late at night Australia-time, and middle of the night America-time, Apple has released the iPhone 2.2 Software Update! You get:

• Enhancements to Maps
  • Google Street View
  • Public transit and walking directions
  • Display address of dropped pins
  • Share location via email
• Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls
• Resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
• Improved formatting of wide HTML email
• Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)
• Improved stability and performance of Safari
• Improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages
• Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen
• Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings

Hilarious - A woman on the iPhone forums says that her husband claims that the Genius Bar at Apple told him the iPhone has a bug that makes it look like the phone emailed random photos to people. Because in her husband’s phone there looks to be an email sent to a girl with a  ”raunchy” photo of him. 

Please help! I took my husband’s i-phone and found a raunchy picture of him attached to an e-mail to a woman in his sent e-mail file (a Yahoo account). When I approached him about this (I think that he is cheating on me) he admitted that he took the picture but says that he never sent it to anyone. He claims that he went to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store and they told him that it is an i-phone glitch: that photos sometimes automatically attach themselves to an e-mail address and appear in the sent folder, even though no e-mail was ever sent. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? The future of my marriage depends on this answer! 

And the apple forum goers are backing him up!

Apple is getting sued because the iPhone 3G isn’t as fast as it was claimed to be, and now also because the white iPhones develop hairline cracks in their case.

I suspect it’s happening to the black iPhones as well but nobody can see the cracks and so they don’t care.

The Punch-O-Meter. You grasp the phone (firmly) in your hand, tap the screen, and then give it your best shot. The app uses the phone’s accelerometer to measure how fast you can punch. After each punch, you get a score and a one-to-five-star rating. It is guaranteed to destroy your phone.

Who knew the accelerometer they originally put in the phone just to detect sideways orientation would turn out to actually be really useful?

Google just released a new app that lets you ask your iPhone anything, using your voice, and it’ll bring up the google search results for it. Now wouldn’t it be a smidgen cooler if it spoke the answers as well?

Of course it’ll be tuned for the American accent, so let us know how well this works for you and your Australian accent. (Speech recognition has always been annoying that way.)

According to a study by SquareTrade, iPhones are the most reliable mobile phone. They’re the least likely to malfunction, but the most likely to be dropped, because of their slippery case.

I’ve found they can be dropped from quite a height and still be fine, even without a protective case. What’s the highest you’ve dropped your iPhone from and still have had it undamaged?

The RAZR is now #2, and the Blackberry is #3.

ZDNet say it’s the US$200 pricetag that made it the winner. The phone is basically free here in Australia, so is it set to be the #1 phone in Australia as well?

The new iPhone firmware (2.2), coming out soon, will let you download new podcast episodes right on your phone & iPod touch. So that means you can keep your iPod touch in your car and have an automatically updated podcast stream.

So that’s essentially a personalised radio station. Pretty awesome. So long as your wifi reaches your garage.

Apparently poor(er) people tend to buy a single iPhone instead of a computer + an old-style phone.

Steve Jobs has previously shrugged off the rumour that Apple will produce a netbook (a cheap, small screened notebook), saying that the iPhone is that netbook. He may be right. What do you think?

Now that’d be nice; to make an iPhone app and have it advertised on TV. Because that’s what Apple have started to do. An ad per app. But only the uber-cool ones. Shown here is the Shazam app ad. The Shazam app recognises which song is playing in the air, so you can then download it from the iTunes music store. Make an app that cool and you too could be a (behind the scenes) TV star?
